Franco Corelli was born in Ancona in 1923 [1921], and began his successful theatrical career at the age of 30. The celebrated tenor is an avid sportsman. Before he turned to bel canto, in fact, he was a swimming and rowing champion. In the photo above, we see him with Vittorio Gassman. On the right, he is in the company of his wife, former singer Loretta di Lelio, who follows him on all his "tours," both in Italy and abroad. [Actually, it is not Loretta in the photo; we do not know who she is.]
"I believe in luck," asserted Franco Corelli some years ago, "because I know it exists and that one day or another it will show up and completely change the course of my life."
These words were uttered by the talented young tenor, when, before he began his shining theatrical career, he was still a simple clerk at Ancona City Hall. Lady Luck wished to reward the confidence of Franco Corelli, who today, at only 36 [39] years of age, thanks to his exceptional artistic talents and perseverance, has become one of the most appreciated opera singers in the world. Corelli, who has sung in almost all theaters in Europe and America [America not yet], enjoying the greatest successes, from next week will perform on "Grand Hotel" the photostory "Andrea Chénier," based on the famous opera.
Franco Corelli was recently engaged as the interpreter of "Trovatore" in the opera season at the Arena di Verona (see photo on left). Here on the right he is pictured with soprano Magda Olivero.
Corelli is a handsome, dark-haired young man of athletic size (he is 1.86 meters tall). He does not indulge in much recreation. He makes the occasional automobile trip, but his favorite pastime is to photograph the most beautiful monuments in the cities he visits. He loves animals very much.
