For years after his retirement in 1976, Franco prepared his return with varying degrees of determination. The period of rest due to nervous exhaustion became longer and longer, and fate, in addition to his own indecision, intervened several times, which always prevented his comeback. Finally, in 1980, at the urging of his friend Jerome Hines, he agreed to a brief appearance with a couple of songs at the New Jersey State Opera’s annual ball, and this seemed then to restore his confidence and enthusiasm for performing, and he agreed to make several concert appearances in 1981. Of these, two ended up materializing (+a couple of songs performed at a restaurant gala that took place at a hotel in San Diego), a participation at a gala concert in April and a solo evening in July, at venues in New Jersey.
